Welcome to the Jackson High School Family and Consumer Science website. Thank you for visiting.
I am Jan Roberts. I have taught a total of 20 years, all at Jackson High School. If I had not stopped teaching to pursue another career path, this would have been my 37th year of teaching! Wow! Is that possible? How time flies!
I am a graduate of Jackson High School myself and have always lived in Jackson. I earned a BS in Home Economics Education from Ohio University in 1977 and taught at the old high school for nine years. I then attended Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, earning another BS degree and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer. I worked in funeral service from 1988 until 2002, when I decided to return to teaching and I have been at JHS since.
I have been married 37 years and have a daughter, Kelsey, who is an RN. I love dogs and have seven who wandered into my life. We adopt and care for strays who show up at our house and need a home. Since we live close to the dog pound, I think all our dogs are escapees! I enjoy auctions and antiques and anything that involves a hook, yarn, fabric or needle. Last year I led crafts in after school SUCCESS. I hope to do so again this year and I invite you to join us. (See my file on the One Million Pillowcase Challenge.)
I am extremely lucky to be teaching the greatest kids in southern Ohio in a beautiful new school. I love my classroom and the food lab next door. With six fully equipped kitchens, we can do some serious cooking and learning. And did I mention the huge pantry and separate laundry room? This Family and Consumer Department is every FACS teacher's dream.
I love teaching practical living skills. Hopefully, what students learn in my classes will help them live better lives. I think students enjoy the classes because they are learning and practicing life skills. They are up and moving around. They are interacting, socializing and making new friends. And frankly, they are getting a break from the rigors of the core academic subjects and mandated testing. My classroom sometimes appears chaotic, but I assure you, learning is happening. Though it takes nerves of steel, I wouldn't want to be teaching any other subject, in any other manner, in any other place. I am happy, happy, happy!
